The Art of the Jam (R3R APR8)
Room3 started in a University of Minnesota practice room, sparked by a jazz combo at the instruction of Phil Hey. Our previous drummer, Parth, texted our combo group chat and invited everyone to a party he was throwing. Beck decided to go, and after a few beers, Beck and Parth exchanged the most famous words continually exchanged by eager-to-play musicians: "Hey bro, let's jam sometime!"
Drum and bass jams are great for a moment, then they can become a little dull (unless you are playing an 8 string MTD bass). "That Eli kid from combo is killing," we thought, "let's see if he wants to jam with us." Soon after, the three of us were playing in Parth's apartment, definitely annoying his neighbors. We didn't prepare anything to play and the chemistry between each other was just a small spark at the time, but the three of us together created an opportunity to explore and write new ideas that would've been impossible to cultivate alone. The members have changed, but the jam has remained the same ever since.
Years later, we are blessed to be strong members in the beautiful jam-centered community of Minneapolis. Whether it's in someone's basement studio, The Legacy Building, Flavor World, Walker West Academy, or at the Berlin Jazz Club, the spirit remains the same.
Every week on Wednesday, A local creative organization, The Cherry Pit, hosts a late night open jam session called "Bible Study". This Jam has become our favorite weekly spot and is also not religiously affiliated in any way. TONIGHT, Beck, Colin, and Eli are joining as the house band for this jam, and we are going to blow the roof of this place. We would love for you to join us.
